Initializing or formatting a disk

Disk may not have a file system in it. Before it can be used, a file system needs to be created. Please be aware that creating a file system or formatting an existing drive will erase the content in that drive, it is one way process, it is a very-very-very hard task to restore content from magnetic medium after formatting, and it may be costly procedure too, it is almost impossible to restore content from SSD drives, since such drives don't use magnetic medium.

When formatted a physical disk can be split onto several virtual disks. It is done for better organization of data in that disk.
