HTTPS
Letter S at the end of HTTPS stands for secure. Data that is transmitted using HTTPS connection is secured.
In cases when sensitive information needs to be transmitted over Internet such as financial or personal information HTTPS needs to be used.
Encryption of data requires more processing resources, therefore transferring data over HTTPS requires more processing resources.
Some sites redirect from HTTP to HTTPS by default. I think this is done with a purpose of not having headaches with sensitive data being transmitted not encrypted.
