Certificate authorities are organizations that had been trusted by Internet browsers to issue security certificates that can be used to encrypt data.

There are root certification authorities and there are intermediate certification authorities. Root certification authorities delegate job of issuing encryption certificates to intermediate certification authorities.

Because encryption certificates represent very sensitive information, then such data needs to be highly secured.
