​A fiber-optic cable uses light to transmit signals. Fiber optic transmissions are fast, but fiber optic cables are fragile. 

Cost wise fiber-optic cables cost more per foot than network cables that use copper. Installation wise cost to install fiber an optic cable is also more than installation of a copper cable.
