A motherborard

A motherboard is the main board of a computer. Motherboards have a socket for a CPU. There two main types of personal computer CPU manufacturers: Intel and AMD. A motherboard which you get suppose to support a processor type that you have, or you are planning to buy.

Motherboards have different number of extension slots. If having additional boards are important to you, please get a motherboard that have enough slots to support your equipment.

A motherboard may have embedded video into it, sound or network connectivity, however getting separate boards to support this functionality will be a better quality.

For example getting an additional video card means that quality and performance of video will be better using an external video card. Having an external video card is important for gamers, built-in video is sufficient for general use.

Same principal applies to built-in audio or network card. Having separate cards for audio and network will mean that you can get better sounding system and network connection will have more capabilities. For example it is possible to get a network card with multiple slots, where a motherboard will have just one.

Motherboards also vary by chipset they have. Chipset will indicate how well performing a motherboard is going to be and which features and CPU types will be supported.
