Ways to protect a computer against malware

First line of defense is to install software updates. Outdated software may have vulnerabilities that can be exploited to elevate access.

Install antivirus software. Second line of defense is to install antivirus software. I am not recommending one, please do your own research which antivirus software is good for your computer or your company.

Antivirus software not only needs to be installed, but updated on regular basis, because new malware appears daily and old antivirus signatures will not be good for the new malware.
