User authentication

Authentication is a process of verification of user identity.

There are three types of verification. These are listed in order of cost and in order of complexity. These methods are:

  1. something you know
  2. something you have
  3. something you are

Something you know is a password or a pin.

Something you have is some sort of token or device similar to Gemalto. Gemalto was acquired by Thales Group.

Something you are is a fingerprint or retina scan.
