Locking: Ensuring Safe Access in Concurrent Programming
Locking is a synchronization mechanism used in multi-threaded and multi-process environments to prevent data corruption caused by simultaneous access to shared resources. It ensures that only one thread or process accesses a critical section at a time, avoiding race conditions and maintaining data integrity.
1. Why is Locking Important?
In concurrent programming, multiple threads or processes may attempt to read and write shared data simultaneously. Without proper synchronization, this can lead to:
Race Conditions: Unpredictable results due to simultaneous updates.
Data Corruption: Inconsistent or incorrect data.
Deadlocks: Two or more processes waiting indefinitely for resources.
2. Types of Locks
1. Mutex (Mutual Exclusion Lock)
Ensures only one thread accesses a resource at a time.
Other threads must wait until the lock is released.
2. Recursive Lock (Reentrant Lock)
Allows the same thread to acquire a lock multiple times without blocking.
Useful for recursive functions that require locking.
3. Read-Write Lock (RWLock)
Multiple threads can read simultaneously, but only one thread can write at a time.
Useful when reads are frequent, and writes are rare.
4. Spinlock
Continuously checks for lock availability instead of sleeping (busy-waiting).
Used in high-performance systems with very short lock hold times.

A deadlock occurs when two or more threads are stuck waiting for each other to release resources.
Preventing Deadlocks
- Lock Ordering: Always acquire locks in a consistent order.
- Timeouts: Set time limits for acquiring locks to avoid indefinite waiting.
- Deadlock Detection: Monitor resource requests and handle conflicts dynamically.
